What do you guys use for heartworm prevention? My breeder suggested Ivermectin for cattle & swine. .1 ML per 10lbs. ?????

HI ALL,
I NEED SOME HELP HERE ON BUTTON TUMOURS. OTTO HAS DEVELOPED A HISTIOCYTOMA I BELIEVE IT IS CALLED ON HIS HIND LEG. I HAVE READ THAT THEY A PERFECTLY ROUND NON MALIGMNANT,CAN GO AWAY ON THERE OWN BUT MAY NEED SURGICAL REMOVAL. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ANYONES EXPERIENCE W/BUTTON TUMOURS AS THEY ARE FOUND IN DANES.

How often do you trim their nails?

How often do you trim your Great Dane's toe nails? I take Mack to Petsmart to get them done because I'm not sure I won't screw it up, and US$11.00 seems like a pretty good deal to let someone else handle it. However, they never seem to trim them short enough and I think I may be waiting too long between trimmings. Yesterday I noticed Mack limping a bit and then realized his toe nails were way too long. Psychotic Episodes

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Not my dog but my daughter's dane will, for no reason we can tell, freeze in one place and just shake like he is terrified. He just trembles maybe for 3 or 4 minutes then walks off seeming a little dazed.

Tail Amputation

So, Soph's tail was amputated on November 6th. Stitches removed 11/17. In hindsight, I think the vet (not mine-he was on vacation) took out the stitches too soon. We've been back every week to see our vet (at no charge-gotta love his integrity).

She's also on steriod treatment for meningitis, which I understand slows the healing process (as well as suppressing the immune system - poor girl has had no contact with other dogs or been to the store or park, etc). Tails...

Insurance Payments

Ok, there's much talk about which insurance company provides the best benefits.

Well, we have VIP and finally submitted a claim for 2009 - about $6600. Yes, our girl has some problems.

Received checks today and they total $2500. Some claims were refused, and looking at the policy, rightly so. I could easily have left off $1000.

So, I'd say they paid 50% for visits, vaccines, medications, testing (alot of it), meningitis diagnosis and tail amputation...

When to use a coat?

It's getting cold here,27 right now.When do you usually use a coat?I just took Otis outside for a bit to go to the bathroom and it did not phase him at all.He actually got super frisky and started zooming around like a nut!He's currently about 105 pounds and skinny,i was hoping to be able to wait till He's grown enough to buy a coat that he will not outgrow in a few months.

Our female is almost 5 months old and we had thought about breeding since she's from a great line of champions, but after doing our research have decided that even though we bred Goldens in the past, we're not experienced enough with this breed and would like to do the responsible thing and have her spayed. Our big question is when. With Danes, I've read that you should wait at least 1 yr. for hormonal changes, wait until 3 months after 1st heat, early is better for cancer...

Bumps on Neck - Problems with Collar

It appears that Isis' collar is irrating her neck and causing little bumps under her coat. We have used a Lupine Martingale collar, tried a Lupine Flat collar and went back to the Martingale. Has anyone else ever had this issue occur? Can you recommend another collar I should use for her? I've never had this problem with my past pooches or my Mastiff or Boston. Ideas?

Strange noises coming from my dane's abdomen

Our 5 1/2 year old Dane has very odd noises coming from her abdomen area. It started early this morning; as far as I know she has eaten normally, drank water, and not gotten into anything in the yard. She (and our other 2 year old dane) appear normal in all aspects. hiccups, all the time

Hello! Roosevelt, my 14 week GD seems to have hiccups a lot, mostly after he eats. He has an elevated feeder and we're feeding Earth Blend, which is a high end kibble for all stages that he has been on since before I got him. The hiccups don't lead to vomiting. Kahlua has white spots on her body

I have been noticing that Kahlua has been getting small patches on her that has no hair. I believe that it's from playing with the other dogs but is it possible it could be some thing more serious? She's 4 months old and very active and as we all know how clumsy they are . Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Probiotics/nutritional supplements

Just wanted to check in and see what everyone recommends for a probiotic supplement. My vet has large dogs and she uses FortiFlora which costs about $30 for 30 sachets. Since I have 2 dane puppies, I want to be sure they're getting the correct thing while trying not to go broke at the same time. What's everyone else using?

Diarrhea/watery stools and vomiting in a 6 month old Great Dane who is about 67lbs and was spayed on Nov 11?

Nov 11-spayed
Nov 12- Picked her up from Vet in the late afternoon
Nov 13- vomited for the first time and wasnt eating much ( normally eats 3 cups twice a day but was only eating about 1cup twice a day)
Nov 15- noticed her incision was a little red but couldnt get a good enough look at it to really tell
Nov 16- rushed her to the Vet ER bc her incision was...

Sick after being spayed

I dont post here much but I have a 6 month old Great Dane. We took her Wed Nov 11 to our vets office to have her spayed. We went the whole 9 yards and paid for all the extra monitoring and that night to be boarded and watch. We called probably about a million times to check on her. When I talked to the vet she told me that Dahlia (our great dane) did wonderful and was up walking around and was about to eat. She told me I could pick her up any time they are open the next day.

Otis is about 9 1/2 months old now and growing fast,but i can not get him to put on weight.I give him 8 cups of Orijen a day and his ribs are still visible.I have had a few stool samples tested to make sure he did not have parasites and all were negative.My dog trainer says not to worry and he will fill out when his growth slows down.But i still worry.What do you Guys/girls think?Should i just chock it up to fast growth and not worry as much?

Hello everyone this is my first dog and she is a great dane mix shes 7 months old. Shes beening having these really bad rashes latley around her tummy, in her warm spots is what the vet calls them. The vet has done skin scraps, we've tried several different alergy pills. Im posting some pictures maybe I could get some suggestions on what to do.
