Posts: 97 12/12/2008 4:12 PM	Tags : None I will first start out by saying that I've been dane owned for almost 11 yrs now, and don't ever plan on a time when I'm not dane owned. I know all about the puppy stages, the frustrations etc, yet I choose to do it over and over again b/c it's all worth it, and the bond you form over the yrs is priceless. I get that, it's almost akin to being a parent. However lately I hate to admit, but I've found myself wondering about how much easier it would be without my 10month old male. He is probably the most hyper dog...let me rephrase that, the most hyper ''dane''(and at times destructive), I've ever had along with the most stubborn. You can't keep your eyes off him, for one minute without him getting into something, unless i give him a bone to occupy his time. I am sitting here thinking of who I can invite over for Christmas dinner(several of our husbands are deployed, and i was thinking about having a get together at my place), but that's a no go b/c he doesn't know his manners yet and can be very bogartish. It's not fair to keep him in the cage for 3+ hrs,(he's been there that long before, he will just whine&bark if he see's all the mingling etc) but it's also not fair for my friends to have to keep shooing him away. I know all about getting enough excercise, and discipline etc, I guess I am not looking for advice, just a place to vent. Oh we've also been in our lovely new place for only a few days and he's pulled up pieces of the carpet just by juggling with his bone. He is this way with or without exercise, so that is not really the answer. I know this too shall pass... Anyone else not ashamed to admit taht you've felt overwhelmed? Posts: 389 12/12/2008 4:24 PM	OMG!!!! It's not just the Dane! Between 4 dogs, 3 cats, 2 house rabbits, 2 teenagers (and their friends), and my soon-to-be 87 year old mother, there are days when I just want to be a hermit. Hang in there, as you know, it does get better eventually.

I have a house full of kids, a hubby that's been gone for 6months, trying to fix things that only want to break when he's gone, and other daily stressors. I think things will get easier once he gets back, and i don't feel like I'm doing this all on my own. Someone would say, "well why'd you get him in the first place", and I'd just have to say.."is that what you'd say to a mom, after she vented about having a hard day with the kids"? Anyway, I do love him, he's got his good days. He brings the kids and I lots of laughs, and he's just a lovable big teddy bear. I just have to keep reminding myself that he IS a good dog....he's just STILL a puppy...a trying puppy!!!!!!! Once you go dane, you will never be the same!!

Posts: 236 12/12/2008 6:15 PM	Overwhelmed, yes! Harley is my first Dane, but not my first large dog by any means. While I knew he would be a puppy and do those things puppies do, I never knew he would do some of the things he did. I did my research, but I still wasn't prepared for the destruction he caused (he ate a love seat, tore up the floor in my kitchen, tore the wallpaper off my kitchen walls...and those are just the things I can think of off the top of my head). And like you said he did all of these things eventhough he was getting walked for an hour plus lots of fetch in the yard, and tug of war in the house. So yes, I've been overwhelmed! The good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel. At 15 months Harley does have an "off" button now and he will go lay down when I'm not able to play right that second. So, keep your head up! Posts: 133 12/12/2008 6:29 PM	I get frustrated.. more thna I should! lol temp living situation staying with my mom, brother, sister, my son, my moms 3 cats, and my two dogs... tight squeeze! then tonka will get the zoomies and jumps over the couch and runs into the wall and she just won't stop sometimes! then she barks at me when i tell her too.. lol those days i wanna pull my hair out!

Posts: 125 12/13/2008 3:37 PM	OMG! You have no idea how glad and relieved I am to know I am not alone. I feel like Merle has taken over my life. (She's 7 1/2 months now) I love her dearly, don't get me wrong, we all do, and I certainly don't regret the decision I made when I took her in from her previous home, but it would be nice to sleep in just one morning! It is like having a toddler all over again. I am still very fortunate that she hasn't torn up anything too important like furniture and stuff like that, but I did just have to replace my 18 year old son's cell phone, so she seems to be getting into more and more stuff. So far that has been the worse she has torn up. Of course we have the usual casualties: her dog beds, oven mitts (she loves oven mitts), paper towels, etc. But she is going thru a real defiant stage right now that is just frustrating the hell out of me. She will bark at every little thing, get the zoomies, but wants nothing to do with the outdoors since winter has come. Our usual nice calm walks have even been more of a challenge. She really doesn't like the snow. We have had the pleasure of having a couple of warmer days with storms, then the temp drops and everything freezes over and the rain turns to ice or snow, covering the already icy roads and sidewalks. And I am so frustrated with myself too, my fibromyalgia is really bad in the cold so I hurt constantly and that leg I broke will never be the same, so I feel very cranky and is a battle to keep my emotions in check while dealing with not just a GD puppy who is challenging me, but teenage sons. I still have a few odds and ends things to finish with this house remodel, but it doesn't get done b/c reg every day chores and then the constant attention a puppy needs takes over. And she has really started talking back more, like you said Tonka. I find that I don't go anywhere because I don't want to crate her any more then I have to. I turn down co-workers, friends, and family all the time. I love her so much and the boys just thrilled with her and bring friends by all the time to meet her. I know things will get better, but in the meantime it is so tiring. I also know what you mean about having company over, mydanesRgreat! I just needed to vent too! But if anyone does have any advice with the talking back I'll gladly take it! Thanks again, for your honesty...that really opened the flood gates for me...ha ha ha, sorry about that! I also noticed that Merle has taken over my conversations! I am always telling co-workers or whoever Merle stories. And people are always asking me how she is doing! Silly pup! I love her!

Posts: 390 12/13/2008 7:10 PM	OK, ladies and gentlemen (does it seem that it's mostly ladies who are currently stressed?), The good news is, the holidays will be over in 3 weeks, the kids will go back to school, and the puppies will eventually be dogs. I get so frustrated when I come home from work and hear how naughty Venus has been while I'm gone, but then I look into those beautiful soft eyes of hers, and it's all worth it. Just remember, everything that has happened before now is what lead to what's going on right now, and we wouldn't be the same people we are without the trials to go along with the joys.

My 9 year old mix that I have had since he was 4 weeks one day decided to eat a door jamb and three window sills. and ever so random poop surprises in my bedroom.. ARGH.. Now it has turned into my blind danes cold nose looking for me when my alarm goes off ever morning... and my aunts westie that I am babysitting (only one more night!! YAY) deciding to rip out his hair due to allergies I did not know about. I love all my dogs and kids and cat and everything but sometimes I just need ME time Some of my babies. I love my friends dearly, but....love me, love my dog. Understand that when you come over, you are part of the training. If the dogs get a bit exited, or tries to climb you, like they often do, just say "off" and give a nudge. The boys are part of my life as are my friends. Overwhelmed, don't tell another soul, but, yes, now and then. Then a big licking kiss comes my way and it's all over. Yup, the dogs have taken over my life...... and I would have it no other way. Posts: 570 12/14/2008 11:37 AM	Yeah...I'm pickin' up what your puttin' down. I second Rocky's statements. We have five dogs, two cats and an indoor rabbit. DellMarie gets most of the frustration/overwhelming as she is home with them 90% of the time - I get to run off to school and deal with the kids during the day. The most trouble we've had lately is that Fin is beginning to realize he is a boy in a house with four females!! So he is just starting to think he may want to do some special things to them - and the girls are having NOTHING to do with that - guess he has to work on his moves a bit!! - so he will be going in to get his balls chopped next month. Not to mention he has learned to open the cabinets and now the FRIDGE! - He put a 12 inch row of permanent big teeth marks in the fridge door and has utterly ruined the couch cushions. But you have to remember to laugh - things can be replaced...and they are just things. Not that we have a money tree in the back yard but you won't remember your refidgerator when your on your deathbed - you'll remember all the great people and animals in you life!! Anyway - they have all been a bit short with Fin which has caused a bit of crabbiness in the house - and DellMarie is really feeling frustrated having to constantly keep them from crabbing at each other - though they are all sleeping on the bed together right now so it all depends on the moment. With all that said, DellMarie and I would NEVER give any of them or the experiences with them up. In fact, we are adding another in January - a special circumstance - have to do it. I do feel for those out there having to deal with human children as well as Dane pups.... we just have to deal with the furry ones! As time goes on I've noticed constant changes in our 19 month old's attitude and behavior. Better and better all the time. We avoided the damages you had via our fantastic puppy care kennel. She loves going there, and they love having her. About to put up the Christmas trees, so I may be back later to rescind all the nice things I've just said about our Sophyra! Thanks for all your replies, it makes me feel better. Yesterday he had a calm moment and nudged his head on my chest. Then I thought back on this thread, and it made me treasure that moment more. I know he'll eventually ''grow up'', and I'll look back and miss his puppy antics. Thankfully he's never destroyed anything of value. He chewed on the edge of my recliner, but it's at the bottom and only a small portion so it's not too noticeable. I bought two area rugs today to put over our carpet..that should help some. Once you go dane, you will never be the same!!

Posts: 6 12/15/2008 8:16 PM	I can so relate. 3 kids, 3 cats ( one a crazy physco Siamese that I adore), 3 dogs ( 1 Lab, 1 Dane, and one French Brittany that decided to come into heat a month late just for the Holiday season GGGRRRR.) So right now my house is a zoo. Ryllies the only boy and nuetered so that makes life easier. But right now we just had a Blizzard and now it is so cold (-20 with -40 or more windchill) and they will not go outside unless I go out with them BRRRR. The hubby also works 14 or more hours a day so no help there. Plus Ryllies eating every thing issue. I just tell my self BREATH BREATH!!!!!!

Magnum is my first GD (but not my last) and there are some days that I feel like climbing the walls. I have to give all of you major kudos for dealing with multiple pets, children, and spouses (usually all at the same time). Sometimes I think what was I thinking but then I watch him when he's asleep or just laying with his head in my lap or on my shoulder when we are driving in the car and then I remember . Magnum just turned a year last week. Thankfully, he hasn't really done any really distructive other than digging in the yard (knock on wood). Magnum ~Adrianne~

Posts: 251 12/16/2008 8:33 PM	YES !!!!! I don't have kids or cats or even puppies. I have 4 dogs ranging in age from 3 yrs to 8.5 yrs. This year has been one of the most frustrating I have ever had. I have spent more money & time at the vet in the last year than ever before in my life. Isis has had health issue after health issue, all small and relatively minor, but it is one right after the other and sometimes a couple at a time. I think she is finally on the road to being healthy (knock on wood). Even Venus stepped up w/ an infected toe issue that we spent 6 months soaking, cleaning, and different antibiotics. We just finished Isis' last dose of antibiotics a few days ago. I thought I could breathe for a while. Then the other morning I was awoke by the wonderful smell of diarrhea. It was my labx, I know that, cause he can't just deposit the poo in a pile, he has to spread his in a large circle, which is much harder to clean up. Thankfully, he had the one bought of diarrhea and that was it. And of course right now they all need baths and nail trims, and being a groomer by profession, I am ashamed to say, I just don't have the energy. Some days I wonder what the heck I was thinking having 4 dogs, then they give kisses and act like the well trained, wonderful little souls that they are and then I know why I'm such a sucker. I agree RockyV180, I wouldn't have it any other way either. I love my Merle with everything I got and I know every moment we have already shared together has been so precious to me! And I agree, love me and love my critters, but I also have to understand, or at least attempt to, that not everyone is an animal person and I try to respect that in them as much as I expect them to respect my love for animals in me. I totally don't get it though. But then again, I love spiders, reptiles, as well a the 'normal' pets. And most people I have encountered most certainly don't understand that. This is definitely a thread that people who are thinking about getting a puppy should read. The ideas of that sweet rolly polly puppy is so easy to fall for, reality can be quite different! Thanks again everyone! I have enjoyed sharing our struggles and smiles with all of you!

Sometimes I get overewhelmed with Zeus jumping, but its a learning process and just like Rocky said your friends and family have to realize that when they come over they are going to be a part of the learning process, and just to tell him off . Other than That Zeus is Awsome and I melt everytime we play and he is cuddling with me!! Well take care and have a great weekend everyone!! T.G.I.F.!!

I had just put my boyfriend's dinner in the oven and took Harley go to potty before Bryan got home and what happened...Harley took off after a "rabbit" at full speed, I had to let go of his leash or he would have pulled me down. So there he is running free. We have a large yard, but we do have a busy highway in front of the house and a busy road behind the house. Thank God he got side tracked in the Pine trees, which he thought was a good place to play hide and seek. I got close to him once, but then he took off for the neighbors where he found their outdoor Christmas decorations. Thanks to Baby Jesus and the manger seen and my neighbor, I finally caught him after 20 minutes. So, yes I do get overwhelmed sometimes still! Posts: 183 12/19/2008 2:49 PM	I remember when I took Zeus walking in the neighborhood during Halloween. Zeus hated the decorations and growled at them as we were walking. I told him it was ok and after a while they did not seem to bother him. He just looks at the christmas decorations now. Everyonce in a while he will start to growl at frosty or something, like that but we just keep walking.. I think he is getting used to them..

Posts: 49 12/19/2008 3:07 PM	my girls have been to hyper lately i dont know what the deal is. so today i decided that since the kids were begging me to pull them in the sled i would give that task over to the dogs i brought out both of their harnesses and leashes and rigged them up like a sled dog team lol let me tell ya they did awesome and they are soo pooped now atleast for a few hours! i think they get board easily so sometimes giving them a new job or toy really makes them happy and in return they annoy us much less

I've learned that it's not "what" I have in life, But "who" I have that counts.. I've learned that I cannot make someone love me; I can only be someone who can be loved ... The rest is up to them. I've learned that two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different. I've learned that it can take years to build up trust, And only seconds to destroy it. I've learned that my background and circumstances, May have influenced the person I am; But I am the only one responsible for who I become. I've learned that when I am truthful, I don't have to remember anything. I've learned the only thing I can really control in life, Is my own mental attitude.
