Posts: 2 12/16/2008 5:00 PM	Tags : None I've been looking around and haven't really seen much on this exactly so I'm looking for some advice. I'm wondering how much money I should have saved up before I get my great dane. I plan on not getting one for at least a year, but am starting to save now. Did any of you start a savings account for your dane? If so how much did you save up? Also curious how much having a dane costs in a year aka... Dog: $1000 Food: $100x12= $1200 Crate:$250 toys:? Vet:? (I did see a post about vet costs somewhere on here) blah blah blah...priceless!

Posts: 28 12/16/2008 5:13 PM	Dog 1000-1500 Leash $20 multiple collars $50 Several chokes $30 Crate $400 for biggest one Food 100 is liberal for one dog even feeding high end food Toys 100 but the sky is the limit but petedge.com has the best deals Ive found definately try the 16" plush megabones Vet depends on where you live and if you give any vaccinations yourself and if you ever have to go to the emergency vet. You better go at least 500 here Best advise..... save 10k+ and invest what you dont use.

Posts: 461 12/16/2008 8:12 PM	As far as vet bills go, Puppies generally get 4 sets of shots, and those range from $60-$100 per set $350 for puppy vaccs $60 microchip $100-$150 annual exam and vaccs $150-$250 senior annual exam and vaccs $300-$600 spay/neuter and stomach tack $150-$300 teeth cleaning if necessary $500-$1000 for the average emergency $1500-$3000 for any emergency w/ hospitalization $2000-$5000 for bloat/torsion $300-$400 heartworm/flea preventatives annually Definitely go with a dog in the $1000-up price range from a reputable breeder. Generally speaking, when you choose to invest wisely initially, you will spend MUCH less on genetic/health issues later on down the road. Posts: 2585 12/17/2008 12:20 AM *Alison*	After you have figured out all you should have saved for what you anticipate make sure that you have LOTS more for the unexpected.... damaged or destroyed items that must be replaced unanticipated vet visits--I had many in the 1st year.....slammed tail in my tail gate, eye infection, parasites, I know there are more but I don't want to pull out the bills.....Many members carry medical insurance. I don't think that $100/month is liberal for feeding--quality kibble or raw for a growing dane and supplements, I often exceeded $100 a month. Danes are not inexpensive dogs but they are so worth it! Posts: 4 12/17/2008 12:45 PM	Thanks for everyone's posts! I knew it was expensive, its just nice to have someone's thoughts on the matter. I'm at that place where I realized I can afford it and I have the time, but I'm leased into an apt for the next year and I didn't do much research because I didn't think I would be ready so soon so this is a good way of allowing me to have some patience. I want the dog NOW, but I know that I need to wait, so spending the next year getting things ready will have to do, lol! I've already learned so much great info--this place is awesome On a funny aside--all my closest friends have known that I'm going to get a dane when the right time comes. Now they know that I am there and I want one really bad so they are sending me links to ones they see online, in the grocery store, etc. Its cute/funny because I know they are trying to be helpful, but I wonder if they want me to get one more than I do! Plus I don't have the heart to tell them that a random puppy off the little slip of paper at the laundry mat is not gonna happen...

Posts: 178 12/18/2008 1:13 AM	I comend you also on waiting, but I live in an apartment as well, and I will have two Great Danes.Zeus will be a year and a half and Ares well he is still with his moma, I know the ideal place would be a house and a yard, but my apartment complex has a fairly nice landscape and I play with Zeus out in the grass in all and I also take him for walks. I do tend to spend alot of are time at the River as well. I know I cant take little Ares there when I get him, but the point is that Danes are happier with you than having alot of space. Granted you will need to exsercise them more and walk them more. Apartment would not be a problem unless you cant have pets in your apartment.. Thats all I was trying to say bud, sorry if it sounded like I was mad or afended in any way cause I am not.. kudos for waiting tell you know you are ready and good luck on finding that speacial Dane pup!

I started a folder before I got Magnum which I have since added to when I find new or updated information (websites, vet info, trainers/training). It helped alot in the very beginning when I first got him home. It helped me pretend I had a clue sometimes . Magnum ~Adrianne~
