Posts: 1220 01/10/2009 10:46 PM	Tags : None today, I got surprised late xmas gift from my father in law. 9 weeks Great Dane puppy. Puppy is a female and very cute. This is a different female puppy than what Doug and I looked at. Anyways, we brought her home, gave her bath. She is trying to settle in. Duke is fine with this girl and he dont seems to get jealous at all. I got a problem though. She was on bed with Doug. Doug saw something moving on bed. There is this yellowish about 5 mm flat worm looking thing coming out of her butt. It alive. they are moving and moving and coming out of her butt all the sudden. it wasnt coming out when I got her, on our way home, and while we were giving her bath. Im calling the owner of the danes in the morning to let them know about it so they can do something about rest of the puppies. It is kinda gross but here are some pictures so maybe someone can tell me what it is. that way I can go get the meds until I can get her to the vet on Monday. I never had these kind of problem. I got Duke away from the puppy right now. He dont like it but I dont want Duke to get it. Can anyone tell me what they are? I got her in box right now. Posts: 9 01/10/2009 11:02 PM	Looks like tape worm and a pretty severe case of it. Worming her should take care of it. It probably would be a good idea to get any dogs and cats that have come in contact with her wormed too.

I also agree that it would be a good idea to keep her separated from Duke until you can get her to the vet's office for some dewormer. It would be a good idea to get Duke treated, too. Posts: 124 01/10/2009 11:43 PM	How "nice" for your father in law to give you a puppy with worms! Definitely keep Duke away--tapeworms are transmitted when the worm or the flea eggs are ingested. You probably won't get them if you keep your hands washed. Posts: 1223 01/10/2009 11:58 PM	thank you for the website. easy to understand. I got so excited when they took me to the puppy this morning! I saw both dad and mom, and rest of the puppies. Dad and mom are not old enough for breeding though. Just are just about year and 1/2 old. Dad is a merle and mom is a black with white marking. I saw papers of both parents. I was surprised that dad is from brindle and fawn breed. I saw no harlequin or merle colors from parents, grand parents and great grand parents. I thought it was kinda neat to have merle born from these colors. I knew she had worms that I need to take care of moment I saw the puppies. They got very fat belly. mom had 2 merle and 4 black with white marking puppies. merles were both girls. It was nice of them to get me dane puppy though. Im hoping to take care of her first shot and worming before my harlequin boy get here. me and Doug just looking at the worms coming out from her butt with Doug holding her tail up so we can see where it coming from. Im going to stay up so I can take her for bathroom time. Im going to take her across the road from our house until we can take care of the worm problem. I havent see any segments coming out from her butt anymore. Soon as vet open, she will see him. Other than worm problem, she is settling in well. Posts: 493 01/12/2009 3:32 PM	Maya: Have you really thought about this? 2 very young dane puppies and Duke along with your outside dog? Your vet and food bills are about to triple. Please please please think very hard about what you are getting yourself into. I have lots of help and would never take on such a responsibility. The walks, the training......are you very very sure this is something you want to get into? Dogs take alot of time, work, money and love. I have no doubt you have plenty of love for all of them but the rest. I know you feed raw and in a good month I can get by with about $60, multiply that times 3 WOWSER, that's alot of raw meat to find. I know seeing that new little puppy took over your heart but take a deep breath and make sure adding another the end of the month is allowing everyone the opportunity of the best you can give.

While a new Dane puppy is a wonderful gift I honestly believe choosing a good pup is a very important decision. What concerns me is that I don't feel these dogs should have been bred, yet what's done is done. However, you are now giving your heart to a pup whose health may be questionable. It really is your choice but I think you should step back and evaluate your decision to accept this gift. Did this breeder do any health testing? To sell pups full of worms to me speaks poorly for this breeder, also total disregard to ethical breeding and the condition of the kennel looks somewhat shabby. A good though is would you have purchased this puppy yourself had you checked out the breeder, kennel, parents and litter? Honestly we must choose a Dane pup wisely as they are such a health fragile breed. Honestly and not meaning to sound harsh, should I have received that pup as a gift, I would thank my in laws kindly then explain why I could not keep it. Jeff Z. Posts: 1228 01/13/2009 1:11 AM	Lagetella & Jeff, yes, we did sit down and talked about this. This is a puppy from first time breeder. They have plan to make it better for danes soon. We know we are taking a risk for accepting this puppy as a gift. Plus our other puppy coming in very soon. I know it gonna be stressful until they settle down too. I know we are going to have huge vet bills, foods bills and lot and lot and lot of responsiblities and posible health problems too. I did look at the pedigree on both parents. owners are going to make the copy of their papers for me. Most of them (grand parent, great grand parents) they had OFA and DNA test done. Parents havent got it done yet, but owners told me that they are going to very soon. Im not sure what DNA for. There are lot more I need to study and learn about these things. We lost our daughter Chloe in 2005 and we thought about having children but we are not sure if our children will be born what people call "normal" and not want to go through the worst nightmire of burrying a child again. We decided no human kids for us. I find lot of comfort having animals, specially dogs around me. Animals pass away before me and Doug does but while they are with us, we can offer them good home while they help me and Doug out. We wouldnt accept the gift if I knew we couldnt afford them. We did go over the figures and we decided to take the puppy. I did tell my in laws not to get us any animals gift again in the future. Thank you both for the honest opinions! I really appreciated. Owner didnt know why and didnt find out what happened to her. So Im scared that Duke might get sick later on. We've been thinking about rescue, but we decided if we are going to have animals around, we want to know the background of the dogs. If someone have time to check the this breeder, let me know what you think Maya Maya, Concern on health issues for one Dane is scary enough. Now you'll have to run the risk of two Danes? Here is a post that may make you reconsider? He might (not for sure) have wobblers. ilovmybabydane: Well, i know the breeder is not a very good one ( samson's mom was a merle ), so i'm thinking that these issue's are most likely genetic. I know that you get what you pay for but how can you pass up a little puppy crawling all over you and not bring it home? With the wobbler's I have read that before 2 years old and if it is not cause by an injury that is most likely genetic. As I have walked through the paths in my life ... I've learned that it's not "what" I have in life, But "who" I have that counts.. I've learned that I cannot make someone love me; I can only be someone who can be loved ... The rest is up to them. I've learned that two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different. I've learned that it can take years to build up trust, And only seconds to destroy it. I've learned that my background and circumstances, May have influenced the person I am; But I am the only one responsible for who I become. I've learned that when I am truthful, I don't have to remember anything. I've learned the only thing I can really control in life, Is my own mental attitude. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn!

We carefully selected our merlequin Belle after we lost our first dane Dixie last year. Suddenly after Belle had come to her forever home the oppurtunity to adopt a returned pup from our breeder arose. Livvy had been terribly mistreated in her short life so we were talking about introducing ANOTHER pup into our home with a 3 month old pup and our 6 1/2 yo harlequin Scarlett. There were many, many issues ( including behavioral ) to discuss and as a family and many consultations with our breeder and 2 several hour visits we decided to take Livvy. It was a decision I have never regretted except perhaps for a few brief moments when they tag team me. : ) All of the issues the previous posters mentioned we also had explored. Surprisingly cost wasn't first, it was quality time with each pup and training. The bond the two pups share is amazing and having each other gives my older girl Scarlett a break from super energetic pups. Yes there are dogs ALL over the place and my home is far, far from spotless and i think it never will be and that's ok with me! I will take my dogs anyday vs. spotless! There are many surprises : ) in store for you and I commend you and your hub for the decision you made. If I can be of any help re: raising two pups please pm or email me. My two are one week apart and currently are 9 months old. I have about 410 pounds of dog in the house and still counting!

Posts: 238 01/14/2009 3:37 PM	I know that by now this is going to sound like a broken record, but I am on the side of Jeff and Mary at this point. As you all know we kinda did the same thing with our dogs, got too many too soon, thinking that everything was going to be just fine, it was for about 1 1/2 years until Duke matured, and we got Indy. Duke started trying to ride Indy when Indy was only six months and also protecting her from my male Rott Brody while outside, this is how it started. The rest is just history, and we live with a divided house right now, as my males do not get along at all, they would soon just kill each other than share the same part of the house. What I am saying, is just because I know how fast things like this can go down hill, and when you least expect it to, and you never thought you would be in such a situation, because everything was fine for a year and a half, with two males in the house, and your little Merle female pup also maturing during this time, it could get very aggressive at times, if one or both becomes protective of her, or of you Maya. If this ever happens you know how to get ahold of me and I will try to help you through it the best that I can, it becomes very emotional, and very stressful, and to even think about giving one to adoption, and the word "forever home" just makes it worse once you spend money, time, and love to get them to where they are at, and you view your home as their "forever home"! Posts: 1229 01/14/2009 6:19 PM	Mary, thank you for your input. I know we did again for 2nd time about not doing more research about the breeder when I learned so much from this forum. We did actually told the in law we probably dont want it when we got the puppy. than with the money they paid and not able to get the money back if we said no, it was hard decision. I got the address of the breeder where the mom and dad cam from so Im going to check them out and talk to them about the mom and dad soon as they can see us. Dutchess's mom and dad came from local dane breeder and they are okay with us going over there and talk to them. Like post you reposted here about us not wanting to get the puppy from the breeder without talking to them and more research, that why I did lot of research on my harlequin puppy. We talk to them on the phone, through emails webcam and looking at the puppy many times and we were comfortable with them even though they are across the US from us. Doug and I talked once harlequin puppy is train enough, we were going to get another one. I know we should have said no to this puppy but we are going to keep her. I know lot of you guys will say it a bad decision and I might cry about this decision, but we are going to do more than our best for them. bnopp and indyduke, thank you for your inputs.
