Anything other than Revolution? |

hello friends! I usualy put all my dogs on revolution but this year I had a little look at the cost and holy smoking it's about 150 per dog. That would be
$750 for anyone counting and realizing my pain lol I wanted to know does anyone use anything else that they really like for fleas, ticks and hartworm? I'm
not overly concerned about the cost since my darling 4 legged terrors deserve the very best but I wanted to see if anyone used anything else?
Thanks Krista

can you please expand on the garlic and brewers yeast Leshia? Is it used instead of the medications? or with? How is it given? How often? It seems like a
natural way and I am interested in learning more so please share your technique!

ike is currently on heartguard and advantix. i hate using the advantix but he gets REALLY horrible allergic reactions to flea bites and garlic didnt cut it
with the crazed florida fleas, frontline also stopped working for him. it is SO frustrating!!
i also treat the inside of the house with boric acid (a powder) that i just dust on to furniture/carpet areas and then swat it around with a broom to work it in. the particles are small enough that they don't get vaccumed up readily but it interferes with eggs/larvae so you avoid an all out infestation. diatomaceous earth works the same way and can also be used outside (but in florida it sometimes clumps up due to humidity).
if i told a story about my dogs... here they are!

We use Heatguard and Frontline Plus. Both work great and to us seem reasonable in cost. We have always used them and haven't really checked into any
others. Hope this helps!

I have used interceptor for my other (non dane) dogs and that seems to work just fine. Since we just got our danes I've been looking at 1800petmeds.com
for prices since they are so much larger. I can't seem to find anything that is for over 100 pounds. My girls are both about 115. The most I can find is
"up to 100 pounds". Any ideas?

You use a combination to reach dosage for your dane's weight.
My dane is currently 140-145 pounds so he gets one 50-100 pound dose and one 25-50 dose. When you get your dogs' blood tested to assure they are heartworm negative before beginning treatments you could ask what your vets' office recommends for dosage. Whether you get the meds from the vet or on-line you should still be able to get an opinion. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alison and Major..................... great 1st year together! |

I see Revolution for apprx. $60/3month supply. Does anyone have any experience with it. Is it as easy to apply as they say? Messy? I would really like to be
able to use one medication for heartworm and other parasites.

I did use Revolution all last year-- it was easy and I just had to remember to not pet Tristen for a while after putting it on in that spot. XD
I have not done my heartworm test for this year, but I'll know soon enough if it worked or not. Apparently, being on the RAW diet, I shouldn't need to do any sort of worming preventative.. I'm not sure if I want to risk the dog getting heartworm to see if that's true or not. |

Great point. So guys, what is the deal concerning heartworm meds with a dog on a raw food diet?

I guess it depends on your location overall-- I know mosquitos here are nothing compared to back home in Minnesota.. I personally am going to continue giving Tristen heartworm preventative when it gets to be mosquito season. I bought a year long supply of Revolution last year, so I'll continue using that. Being more science minded and still skeptical of many homeopathic remedies.. I wouldn't want to chance not using a heartworm preventative and end up getting heartworms. Tristen has not shown an allergy to Revolution or any problems with it. I'm even more skeptical when one of the natural ways to reduce the risk of heartworms is to give your dog a diet rich in raw garlic... Erm, raw garlic is toxic in large amounts. |

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I just have trouble deciding when I read articles stating that Revolution and other heartworm preventatives are basically
poisoning your dog. They argue that giving these meds is as toxic as the parasite itself. Im a resident in medicine so I too lean towards science too. Just
hard to decipher without firm and established clinical data.

I have used revolution a couple of times and i found it easy to use and had no problems with it except when i used it they would come around and rub against me
and the couch which took some off of them but i still found it to be effective......other than that i think it is great!

Advantix has always worked well for me. It isn't an all in one but the advantix 100 covers up to 160 lbs (thought it says 56-100). I spoke with the Bayer
rep (the maker) andhe told me this which made it a better value. No need to double up. I use the generic version of Heartguard which is about $70 for 6 months
(those I have to double up). I think advantix is about $60 for four months. The main issues I have had with sentinal and revolution is this: Any prevention
given by mouth is not going to ward off fleas and ticks as well as topical and anything topical isn't going to protect from heartworm as well. I use
revolution in the winter but don't trust it in the summer. And sentinal does not stop all life cycles of the flea so I never use that.

Au contraire, topical medications are absorbed into the bloodstream as effectively as medications ingested.. There are tons of human (and animal!) drugs that
are done this way... best example.. suppositories... x_x'
Topical drugs are found in much higher concentrations in tissue when given topically as opposed to orally. Either way it happens, you still have to get through cell layers to get into the bloodstream.

GDaneLady wrote: The efficacy of a product is determined by it's ingredients, not how it is given/applied. If this statement was true, comfortis, capstar, sentinel, and revolution would not work, when in fact, they do. Sentinel is not labeled to stop all life cycles of the flea, so expecting that is silly. It is a "flea birth control" that sterilizes the flea to prevent reproduction. Sentinel is best suited for dogs with low exposure to other animals and environments with fleas. For example, this product will help if you have an indoor dog and you live in a neighborhood and a flea gets on your dog while walking around the block, etc. It is a means to prevent infestation. This product will not help if you already have an infestation. On the same note, Revolution is probably not the best choice for a strictly outdoor dog. You can't find a more perfect product though if you have an indoor cat. Not every product is appropriate for every dog or situation, that's why their are so many. Age, breed, lifestyle, and location determine what product should be used. Also, wanted to comment on using "off label dosing". Though I do it myself, just for anyone who does not know... The use of any product off label can result in the product not working as it should. For example, we'll use heartworm prevention. If you give your dog monthly heartworm prevention that is purchased through your veterinarian and your dog ends up with heartworms, the manufacturer will pay for your dogs treatment. If however, you are giving an off label dosage, you won't see a dime! Always consult your vet about this best medications for your pet |
