Unsure of vet's advice on spaying |
Lead | ||
|
I took Kenzie to get her last puppy shot and the vet mentioned she needed to come back in 2 weeks for her rabies shot. She will be 16 weeks at that time. He
said I could also go ahead and spay her at that time. That seems really early to me! Will doing it so soon affect her? He said doing it when she was smaller
would make the procedure easier on her and safer because of the lesser amount of anesthesia. I also asked about what kind of anesthesia they used and he said
they only use Iso gas, no induction drugs. Does that all sound legitimate? Sometimes I leave the vet feeling confident in their abilities and other times I
think I should look for another place to take her. Does anyone have advice to offer me on this? I want to make sure I do the best thing for my girl!

This is from the Great Dane Club of America (GDCA):
Surgical Guidelines for Great Danes Have you read this post from this section? When to Spay/Neuter and what anesthesia to use Many members of our forum have scheduled their spay at 9 months to avoid the first heat cycle. |

The minimum age for any dog should always be at least 6 months. For Giant breeds, 8 months should be the minimum with 10-12 being the preferred. Here are the
GDCA Surgery Guidlines for Great Danes.

In addition to the great responses so far, don't give a vaccination at the same time as a surgery. Space vaccinations, surgeries, etc. at least 2 weeks
apart.

I had looked at other posts, but hadn't seen the GDCA guidelines. I think I'll start calling around to see if I can find a vet that comes closer to
those recommendations. Thanks for the advice!

Amy, just because your vet recommends spaying at such an age, doesn't mean you need to follow thorough with it. My vet wanted me to give Isis a rabies
vaccine at 14 weeks. I wouldn't do it until she was 6 months old due to research I have done on shot protocols. One vet in our office recommended spaying
for Isis at 4 months, but we're waiting until she is closer to a year. Our mastiff was 10 months old when she was spayed. I would have liked to have
waited a bit longer, but I was unwilling to go through a heat cycle given our family and life style (yes, a bit selfish here, but being honest).

Off topic.. Your puppy looks sooooo familar.. Did you get her from Hudson Kennels? (very nice people.. never met them, but spoke with the husband on the phone
a couple times when i was considering a pup from them.. nice and informative)

No, Kenzie came from Loomis Danes in Oklahoma. Thank you everyone for all your advice!

I guess I'm the opposite. I prefer to spay/neuter younger. My lab was neutered at 3 months and came through it great, and it did NOT affect his growth. He
is a healthy 130 lbs. Remy was just neutered Wed. at 6 months a couple days and has had a longer/sorer healing so far. Deogie never licked at himself or even
acknowledged something happened. Remy looks at himself several times a day. The only other reason I can see for the difference is that they were neutered
differently. (I Know how many ways can there be!) Deogie was just a small incision with 2 stitches, Remy's is along his tummy (kinda) and has about 10
stitches.....

Any explanation for why Remy had such a long incision? Did you have a stomach tack at the same time?

I spoke with the breeder and she said Kenzie's mom came into heat at 9 months old, so I think I'll have Kenzie spayed at about 71/2 or 8 months.
Thanks again for all the advice!

Our humane society spays and neuters puppies and kittens at 8 weeks of age. Regardless of breed.
I hate it. For so MANY reasons. Veda won't be spayed until at least 8 months I can tell you that. |
