Small great dane |
Lead | ||
|
I have a 6 month old female great dane that is extremely small for her age only weighing 47 pounds. We have had a ton of testing done to figure out if
something could be wrong with her and everything has come back just fine. She is eating great and has lots of energy. I was just wondering if anyone has ever
heard of a dane being this small before? What I have been reading tells me she should weigh around 90 pounds.

This pretty little girl was one of my fosters. She was about 15 months old and could not have been more than 80 pounds. She was smaller than my
Greyhound but she was all dane. I even had some documentation from the original breeder and to look at her she looked to be all dane but very petite.

I would take a look at her parents if at all possible, and compare her size to them, or even litter mates if you are close to one, I too have heard to petite
Danes, as long as she is healthy and looks great I would not worry though.

My Blue Girl was 110 pounds at almost 18 months old. She was very petite. I called her my "toy" great dane. You really have to look at the size of
the parents. Some lines are just slow growers ans really don't blossom until 2. If the vet says she's ok, I wouldn't be worried!

Her mom was 135lb and her dad was 145lb. I am not sure if there were some smaller danes somewhere else in her lines. Thanks for all the information so far!

Is she at a healthy weight for her build? If she is at an appropriate weight for her build, there most likely aren't any health concerns...unless
something besides her size seems "off".

My Tess will be 2 years old next month and she just finally tipped the scales at a whopping 95 lbs... People are always asking me if she is full-blooded...
Her mom was 120 lbs and her dad was bigger than that (I can't remember what his weight was.)

My Abbey is only 99lbs and she is 19 months. She is only 30 inches but she looks proportioned and well I am thankful she is on the small side as I only out
weigh her by about 20lbs

It's a funny thing with Danes. I feel my dane is small....he's 17 months/140lb/33" tall and I feel he is quite small. He's obviously bigger
than most dogs I see but I feel he's always smaller than other danes. Strangers comment how huge he is but to me he doesn't seem big at all. I think my
being 6'3 and 250lbs might contribute to this. But he is definitely your classic dane behavior wise.......absolutely hilarious.

My Alexii is 10 months old, 34" and only 95lbs. He looks as though I starve him. He just has an insane metabolism. Every time I up his food, he grows
taller instead of filling out... We're working on it though. My dane mentor has a two year old fawn boy who is teeny tiny(I forget his exact stats, but he
is short and thin...). He was still born and basically had to be brought back from the dead when he was born. We're not sure if this is the cause of his
little-ness, but it seems like a rather plausible explanation.

Im not sure but i still think my Scoob is small, he is 152 pounds and 34 inches. The Great danes here are way bigger than him. I asked a lady yesterday with a
merle how much her dog weigh and she said her dog weighed 185 pounds. Another dude with a fawn dane i asked and weighed 190 pounds. A dude with a b itch Harl
weighed 165 pounds and 35 inches. All the danes i have seen seems to be bigger than mine, i know mine is still 9 months but i dont thinks Scoob will ever reach
190 pounds.

Danes are not supposed to be 200 pounds. It happens, but that's neither the norm nor the standard. Though it's always fun to compare, there are far
more important things than having the biggest dane or wondering if your pup will be "big enough" enjoy them at 80 pounds or 180!

Your dane sounds exactly like my Little Lu; she's two years old and weighs 90 lbs. Her parents were small, 110 & 120. When she was young, she was so much smaller than my other dane that was 2 weeks older that i freaked out and had all sorts of test done just to find out that she's a perfectly healthy petite dane. She's small with HUGE personality! Amy ...........Hogan......................................................Sweet Lu..........................Gracie.................... |

Remember small is a relative term - I always forget how big Abbey is until I visit someone with a Lab or Boxer, they seem so teeny tiny!
Under the Great Dane Club of Canada and US their confirmation on size is that males should not be less than 30 inches (perfer 32) and females 28 inches (perfer 30). They never mention weight though. Heck I enjoy Abbey for her and so what if she is not the biggest Dane in the world - I like her and her goofiness :-) |

Hi!
Just for reference (and to help you feel better), my Dane, Bella, is almost a year old and is only 85 pounds and 28 inches at the withers. My vet says she is perfectly healthy and she has great energy and eating habits. I think I may too just have one of these "miniature" Danes. I look at it positively b/c I hope that will result in fewer hip/joint problems later if she isn't carrying so much weight. We'll see. Andrea |

Some dogs are just smaller I guess. Funny, ald1976, I have a rott named Bella. We saw both of her parents and they were Huge as far a Rotts go. Mine is very
dainty and fine featured. She is perfectly marked but just fine featured. Bella is the alpha of our pack and she makes a great one at that!

After much angst while Sophyra was 9-12 months and dropping weight like crazy, we finally got those problems cleared up.
Now at 26 months, she stands at 34-1/2 inches and weighs about 120#'s. Sounds light, but she is solid and sound. Vet is thrilled at her condition. And, yes, to us they don't look "too big". And like mentioned, then another dog will come by and look like a minitature! Healthy and sound is most important! |
