All in time Mike, forums are not built in a day, or a month. You're enthusiasm and posts make clear, the true treasure of understading a canine friend. Thanks so much for stepping up and trying to jump-start the board. The love for your dogs shines in your posts and enthusiasm. Things will pick up in the near future, trust me.
Let's get it going Jeff, Site Founder & Great Dane Guardian |

I'm new and want to thank you all for the great information and links. Because of this site, I am now waiting until our puppy is 8 weeks old before getting
her. I thought the BYB would be offended and offered to pay for the extra two weeks of food that the puppy would eat but she was completely understanding and
agreed that 8 weeks is best ... no extra food money necessary. I've read all of the negatives about BYBs and am concerned ... Just seeing the disposition
of the parents can be misleading, huh? I was impressed that their dogs were inside, family pets; all present when we visited. The pups' mother was very
docile and okay with us being there ... Obviously this does not help me determine future physical abnormalities or possible aggression, right? We would have
preferred a rescued Dane but were not considered because our yard is not fenced. . . Our dane will be inside all of the time and on leash if outside; does
anyone foresee a problem with this?

JW7 wrote:I think you should be okay. I will recommend (as a new dane puppy owner as well) leashing your new pup to your waist for the first few days. Danes naturally want to be around you but it will truly help. Also seperate Potty Place from Play Place. There is a 'spot' for both in your yard, and when you puppy learns the difference it will be easier on you. Lastly I want to HIGHLY recommend clicker training. Dayna was crate trained in 2 days from me bringing her home. I honestly think it is from the combination of clicker training and leashing her to me when she wasnt in her kennel. Best of luck to you, and CONGRATS! |

Even though I have been a member for several months I am not understanding the start posting Mike is talking about. Is that something different than the topics
that I have been looking at and occasionally responding to? I know I probably sound a little dumb here but I am not familiar with this type of community. I
email and Im except when I am on this site. Thanks for your help with my lack of knowledge.

In response to Puzzle's "it's up to owners' commitment" ... I may have been misunderstood: I didn't mean that "outside" was
off limits; we have access to dog parks, long walks, and open fields; but we're not fenced, that's all. We had a Cane Corso; we know active large (not
giant though) breeds.
Has anyone heard that GD puppies up to a year should not be walked due to their rapid growth? That comes from a vet ... Would anyone comment on exercise "routines" for the first year? And did the extra large crate get sectioned off decreasingly as the pup grew or did you have several different sized crates? I want everything ready as of "yesterday!" Are there any toys that we should avoid? We are stumped for a name ... maybe Elsie (my hubby loves cows!); the pup is a harlequin. If she were a boy, it would be Jigsaw. Thanks for all of your help. |

Love the name. I got the xl crate and used the petition to keep it the right size for Colbi. If you haven't seen her crate you can check it out on one of
the posts. I actually ended up getting an even larger crate for her. I think it is the midwest xxl. She can still fit in the other one it was just getting a
little small. She is 8 months and 97 pounds right now. As far as excersize for the puppies, of course you can walk them but you must keep in mind the age and
how far. My husband took my girl for a two mile jog at 3 months. Very bad idea. the poor thing had bloody feet after but she did it without complaining.
Needless to say we need to be the judge and let them do more as they grow.

I have heard the don't exercise/walk your pup for a year with regards to other breeds too! From what I have read that is nonsense - how can you train a dog
to walk on leash if you don't start until they are 12 months? Also puppies are just natually active and want to play, they NEED to play. I had a breeder
tell me Dane's should not walk up and down stairs for 12 months also (this was from a BYB breeder who has a reputation for breeding Dane's with bad
hips? I would post this as a new post or check with some local breeders as I am not an expert. (but had to give my 2cents anyways!)

Wow how we've grown.
The OP of this thread posted.. C'mon people, let's get this board going and start posting!About one month after this board was launched, this is actually an ancient thread and I'm surprised it wasn't archived. Yes, we've grown a bunch since those early days.

Oh well better late than never, notice this was started in 2006 back then I didnt know that a great dane would fill my life and empty the bank account ha or
eat a sofa, put her head threw a wall, (know it was her as its the shape of her head), lost all our shoes and water system, we do watch her but she must do
these things while she is sleep walking, always asleep (very lazy dog) .......Angela......did I mention the drool bucket loads, the whole family runs away when
she has a drink, must go a check her poo and see what she has eaten today .............(the hose again)
