Just fed up |

I am so fed up with people and there ignorance. I was just yelled at today by some old lady in my own yard because Ryllie did not have leash on in his own
yard. Well she got a huge ear full with some not very nice words in it. She said he is to big to ever be off of a leash even in his own yard. I told her to
check the town laws and stop begin a ignorant person. She then accused him of scaring her at the post office because he was running around town loose. Well he
has never gotten loose and is always on a leash when not in his own yard. I do know which dog that was and she was a Great Dane who had been very neglected
before coming to live with my best friend We were hoping we could help her but she continued getting out of the fence and getting off of tie out cables and
then finally bit my friend a couple of times. The dog was a sweet heart but totally out of control. They had to put her down for everyones safety. Including
there Dane they have which is Ryllies brother. Because when she got out she would take him with. Well anyway back to begin fed up. I am so sick of people
throwing a fit over my big dog even running loose in his own yard(I am always out there with him) when nobody says anything about the 30 little dogs running
loose all over the place. Every time I take my dogs for a walk we are harassed by some little ankle bitter barking and growling at us for 2 blocks. People are
more likely to get bit by that poodle or wiener dog then they are by Ryllie. It is not fair that these little dogs can do this. If my Ryllie got loose the
national gaurd would be called in in 2 seconds flat. OK breath breath. I feel better now that I ranted sorry for going all nuts.

Im glad you feel better!! I get some bad comments from time to time too. I learn to ignore them because unless they decide to learn more about danes, they will
never stop fussing about it. I just finally got my mother in law to accept danes are not hyper and aggressive. She actually enjoy being around my babies LOL

Yep it really hurts, I live on a corner block and people who walk past can see our whole backyard, well on Monday a man with a large dog off the lead yelled at
me and said that backyard is far to small for that dog, I just looked at him and said nothing as we have one of the largest blocks in the neighbour hood and
besides she is a indoors dog, then the day before when walking Cindy one women said how cruel it was to have a pink collar on her (what the) it didnt make
sence to me but then you get nice people to cant wait to see her everyday and tell me she is beautiful so I guess we have to take the good, bad and ugly with
owning a great dane.....hang in there.....Angela

People have no idea about Great Danes- Some think big equals mean, need heaps of exercise, must eat 10xmore than normal dogs, are going to eat their children
or other animals etc etc.
Maybe everyone should start a new topic about the stupid things that have been said to them. How funny Cindy can't where a pink collar??? Has everyone had the comment put a sadlle on that thing?? It was funny when I got Brock I wanted to give him a real cutsie name cause (other than around food and strange men) he was a total sweetheart- we walked right passed a bunny rabbit and he couldn't care less. I miss him- I want to bring him home. |

There were a few times people have told me that "shut your dogs up you f***". My Dane does still bark on people walking pass our front fence, a lot
of them so are so aggresive and swear at me and i just get so pissed off because no one swears at me in my own home so out of anger i just told them
"pick a place and time and i'll be there to sort you out". I know i know i'm bad for saying that but i just get so angry when they swear at
me like that.
p.s. I never had a comment "put a saddle on that thing" but i did get a "Where did that elephant come from?" comment.

The first thing I get from people is what a big dalmation or greyhound I also get the saddle thing the horse or holstein cow one. and also OMG how much does he
eat. Then they are shocked to find out he eats no more then there dog. I also have parents grab there kids and say boy he looks hungry he could eat them. That
one makes me really mad. He would never eat a kid maybe give them a bath but never eat them. It actually hurts his feeling when people move away from him. He
loves all people and dogs and just wants all of there love. The last person that said that to me and my best friend who has Ryllies brother got there head bit
of by my friend. She said never a kid would they eat but maybe an ignorant man like you. Then she told him to grow up and we kept walking. Because the funny
thing was we had all of our kids with us.

I SO agree with you. Last weekend we were at a car show and should have seen all the dogs there (even tho there is a city ordinance that states no dogs
allowed at city events). Guess how many people with small dogs got asked to leave? Now guess who had the big dog and was asked to leave because he was
"scaring" people....right Harley was tucked in a shady spot behind my chair most people didn't even know he was there. But one lady saw him
while he was getting a drink and told the police some story about him scaring her...what ever he didn't even see her. People are prejudice against big dogs
and it drives me crazy. But I'm not going to stop taking him places, he's really good and loves people...we'll just deal with the stupid ones on an
as need basis.

Most people just freak out because of their size. It's not everyday that people come across a huge dane and, for anyone who may have had a bad experience
previous, the combination of the two can be very destructive. Just keep it within yourself that your dane is both respectful and trustworthy as you know them
to be. Other's opinions outside of your family of friends and relatives are irrelevant and ignorant and should be treated as such. You know the laws.
You're in the right. Be happy and enjoy the days with your dane.

I have it as my mission to inform people through action that Great Danes are an amazing breed. You'll always meet people who are ignorant and have these
notions in their mind about big dogs. But I love helping those people see that Danes are truly "gentle giants". One of my examples is of taking Waldo
to the local mall where they have fountains the kids can run in. I walked Waldo around the outside of the fountains so he could cool off, and I could hear all
of these comments from the parents "whoa, what a big dog", and lots of concerned comments. But the kids adored Waldo, and ran up to pet him, and once
the parents saw that Waldo was calm, they started bringing the little ones up to him and asking if they could pet him. I use opportunities like that to tell
them what great dogs Danes are, and (just like kids) if they have firm, consistent training, then you shouldn't really have problems with them.
You can see video of Waldo and my Golden Gus with the kids on my weblog: http://reflectionsofadogmom.blogspot.com/2009/06/super-saturday.html Oh--we get the horse comments all the time, as well. One lady asked if her little one-year-old could sit on Waldo! I politely and firmly declined. |

I get those comments as well. I hate the "You should put a saddle on that thing" and yes I get oh my god how much does he eat! comments as well. and
yes with Ares I get the I have never seen such a big Dalmation! or the the comment that really gets me and I do not know why but its the one that drives me
crazy the most next to the saddle comment is what is he mixed with! He can not be full Great Dane he is the wrong color. I correct them and then go on, it
usually ends in a nice conversation, but then there are those that think they are the smartest thing next to god. If that just happens I just tell them to look
it up and I know what I buy and what I have. Have a nice day.
But the thing that got me going the other day was when my Grandma said that my dogs do not listen to me and that they are out of control.. The thing was she had never seen them so we got into a big fight, and then I said you know what outside right now! I called Zeus, and Ares, and asked them to sit, they sat down the first time I asked, and then I said stay and I walked about 100 feet away and then walked back to them. they did not even flinch, I then said down and they went down with out hesitation, I then proceeded to walk them and bring them around to my grandma where they sat at her feet. I then said do you care to retract your bullshit statement or are you still under the impression my Danes do not listen to me and that they are out of controll! I have not spoken to her in two weeks nor have I seen her since then. I am glad that my Danes and I shut her up! It really gets to me and I agree we should start a thread about all the silly things we hear about are danes.. Good thread! It feels good to vent with other Dane owners that understand!! |

From the original post - yeah, I would be a bit perturbed with someone telling me I need to leash my dog in my own yard....
But as far as the horse comments etc... that doesn't bother me in the least... if anything, I chalk it up to uneducated folks about a particular breed of dog... I would guess I would make a similar mistake if I was commenting on a horse or chicken breed - of which I have about zero knowledge on... I don't think anyone means any harm in saying such things,... they just aren't wise to the breed.... now if someone insists that they know better than the owner of the dog... that is another thing altogether... I think the best one we've got is... "is that a bloodhound?" We're still laughing about that today... so we don't get bent out of shape about it. We know he is 100% Dane and it just takes a sentence or two to explain to folks if they are in the dark about the breed. Most folks just seem enamored by the extremely large dog in front of them. Speaking of that... does anyone - because they are with them constantly - think their Dane is not all that big? But everyone else is flabbergasted? I mean, I know he is big - but I don't look at him and go... "WOW... THAT IS A HUGE DOG!" Funny huh?

BlueBerry Fin...that's so funny because I think that all the time. I have people "that's the biggest dog I've ever seen" everyday, but
Bryan and I look at him and he really doesn't seem that big to me.

You should be ashamed of yourself speaking to your grandmother that way......no matter what she said.
The respectful and gracious way to handle a statement you don't agree with might have been .........hey grandmother, watch this!! Then show her how well behaved they are.

I would be totally pissed off is someone told me to leash up my dog in my own yard. Not uncommon though - my neighbour had the same problem (they don't
have a Dane an Australian Shephard and a little dog) and they actually called animal control who came out and laughed :-)
I fully agree Blueberry Fin - my Abbey is not that big until I put her next to a lab! but really there are other big dogs, maybe not quite as big as ours. I always get asked if Abbey is a puppy as with the uncropped ears they have such sweet puppy faces! I always have to explain that no she isn't and all about cropped vs. not cropped ears. I just enjoy all the looks and stares... |

Remember that we have giant breed dogs that makes a lot of people nervous--there is big dog discrimination. As frustrating as it is to hear some of the jokes
over and over again or to hear someone make a comment that we feel is totally wrong we should react respectfully and responsibly. Politely ignore the dumb
joke comments. Calmly demonstrate to someone that your dane is a well mannered and safe dog and show you are in full control of your dog. Those types of
reactions to the jokes or comments go a long way to educating people and demonstrating what an amazing breed Great Danes are.

I hope no one has taken my comments too seriously.....I think this is just a good way to connect with people who understand because they have often been in the
same situation. I don't want to judge what others do- just offer opinions on what I would do.
Perhaps instead of "stupid things you have heard" I should have wrote "what are the cliche comments you get as a Dane owner" as that is what I was trying to imply. So I apologize for that. |

I agree with lagatella, I should have chosen my words better, and not have gotten so heated about the whole thing. I am usually very calm headed and collective
about the cliche that some people have about are beloved Danes, but I think with me having to move back home, and losing my job just put me on a short fuse,
and my grandma just caught me on a very bad day.. My grandma and I have since then solved are differences and she apologized as well.. I was not upset about
the comment(s) at all and I am glad that lagatella told me I was wrong for the word usage and should have gone about it differently.. I consider him as well as
all of you very good friends and family... so no worries here. I was not affended in any way..

I just have to add a little story that happened to us back in march to lighten this, "leashed in your own yard scenario". it was a beautiful spring
day with a perfect blue sky, although there was still a couple of feet of snow still on the ground. I had the front door open and Brutus was laying in the sun
that was coming in through the storm door window, fast asleep. I was going about my business when all of a sudden Brutus goes "Cujo" at a stranger at
the door. Mind you Brutus loves people has earned his CGC and is very socialized. But this guy wearing a hunting vest, sunglasses and snowshoes must have
really startled Brutus, and by the time I caught up to him all he could say was "that's the biggest f**n dog I've ever seen" when he calmed
down he told me he wanted to get permission to hunt rabbits on my land. So I said sure but reminded him Brutus was friendly but roams my property unleashed,
and if Brutus should approach him that he should get into the fetal position and let Brutus sniff him. Needless to say the guy never came back. true story.
