Posts: 290 07/01/2009 9:01 PM	Tags : None I just wanted to tell a story about them. Zeus has been on the adult breed since soon after we got him. He has never had any digestive problems and never gotten tired of it. About a month ago, we got a new bag and fed Zeus that evening. He threw up a little later then wouldn't touch his food. That concerned me...a lot. I fed him something else and he ate it so I called the company. It was like calling the fire department. They got all the information they needed and the next day their vet called. They take samples of food from every lot....every 15 minutes. She pulled the samples from his lot and tested them. Couldn't find a problem. I had bought another bag and he was eating fine by that time. She said her best guess was that he had eaten something else that disagreed with him and since each bag of food smells differently, he just didn't want the one he had been eating when he got sick. They told me how to get a free replacement bag and to keep a sample of the old one in case a problem does come up (apparently they are not allowed to test samples sent in because of possible tampering). The amount of attention I got over one Great Dane that threw up...once, was amazing.

Posts: 137 07/01/2009 10:36 PM	We have had our dogs on Chicken Soup for The Dog Lovers Soul Adult Large Breed and are now on our 3rd 35lb bag. We have been very happy with the food.... and so have the dogs.

One of the things I like best about this site is the information that is conveyed. I'd like to hear about the other side of the coin. Lagatella, I have no idea and since it was a guess on her part, I didn't question it.

Posts: 185 07/06/2009 12:54 AM	Well, I e-mailed, asking about the ethoxyquin (sp) concern with their source of fish, and they gave me the most dogged answer they could, and refused to even respond to my second e-mail. They said that they did not add it, and that the temperature at which they cooked their food would unstabalize it anyway, thus nullifying any possible carcinogenic concerns if it was applied at the fishery. But they had told this to another user on a different forum, and he did some research that said that it would require a higher temperature. I asked about this, saying that I couldn't find anything specific as to what temperature was required to de-stabalize the ethoxyquin, and they simply ignored my response. So, I decided that I could probably do better with a different food, and save myself any possible heart issues later on, at least due to their diet, anyway. And the dog food analysis site seems to tell everyone but me that Chicken Soup made some sort of written agreement with their fish source about not including ethoxyquin. To me, it reads that the notice they put on their website about it was taken down, and Chicken Soup has declined to answer their questions about the ethoxyquin, and so the food no longer has a five star rating. I asked about the written agreement in my second e-mail as well, but, alas, no response. I encourage anyone else to try and get some information about it, as it seems my luck has run dry. I'm sure my husband would appreciate a $10 per bag drop in cost from the Solid Gold, but with the behavior change with Kira, I'm not sure I would indulge him in changing back, anyway. Posts: 2 07/06/2009 5:40 PM	First, chicken soup is a great grain inclusive food. Not every dog has the stomach to handle it and it can do a number on some but ingredient wise it is excellent. Second, about Ethoxyquin all fish meal transported in the US by law must have this preservative in it. The damage rancid fish meal could do to a dog is much more dangerous than the minute amount of Ethoxyquin contained in any food. Information on the actual anti-oxidant. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4986996.html Another point to note is that the moment Ethoxyquin is incorporated into fish meal it begins to dissipate. Exposure and heat increase the dissipation. For example, while the effect of adding the compound to fish meal may be observed for a period of say, two years, analysis of the composition fails to detect the presence of ethoxyquin per se within a matter of hours. The chance you could even detect any Ethoxyquin in a kibble by the time you got the bag to your home and opened it would be more than slim. I am not a fan of over preserving and adding artificials to foods, but when it is a matter of safety or my dogs health I choose to make an informed decision. The amount of Ethoxyquin used to preserve fish meal used for kibble is 1/33 of the approved amount by the FDA and that is when it goes into the fish meal originally not after the ocean meal is shipped, processed into kibble, baked and then shipped and finally opened at your house.

Posts: 198 07/13/2009 12:59 PM	Hmmmm . . . I might have to try the Eagle Pack. The dogs seem to be doing fine, in fact, better, on the Solid Gold though. I guess the real answer, if I wanted to avoid it, is to pick a fish-free food. Speaking of grainless foods though, since that was brought up . . . Solid Gold also has a grainless formula, Barking at the Moon. They say to use it for high energy dogs, and the protein levels are off the charts. What's a good grain-free food that isn't sky high on protein? Or, at least, with protein levels that are suitable for growing puppies? Dogster Family Page

Posts: 25 07/13/2009 1:12 PM	If i was going to go with a grain free I would go with Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream if you are uncomfortable with protein. It is 24% protein. Orijen (any formula) is also a great option and the same price as Barking at the Moon but much better quality. If you are looking for a lower quality grain free you could go with Canidae ALS grain free or Barking at the Moon. Both have less unique meat sources than Orijen (6) and ToTW (5). As far as protein % being too high that is an outdated myth. Protein has no effect on bone growth, as protein builds muscle not bones. Grain free diets are often lower in calories or the same as grain inclusive diets, but as your dog will be eating 2/3s to 1/2 less of the grain free than the would of the grain inclusive you are consuming much less calories. It has been shown the major contributing factors in HOS. Hip Dysplasia and other growth related issues are excessive calories compared to calorie usage. One thing to consider when looking at no grain foods with higher protein %, is your dog is not consuming on average more protein then he would daily on a 22-25% protein kibble. Your dog eats less normally half or 2/3s the amount of a no grain food that he would eat of a grain inclusive food. 8c grain inclusive at 22% protein and 400cal = 1.76c protein and 3200 calories 5c grain free at 32% protein and 370cal = 1.6c protein and 1850 calories If you are feeding around 9-10 cups you would be feeidng around 6c- 7c TOTW. I personally would not feed more than 7c a day unless my dog was showing weight loss.

Get my household consumption down to about 9 cups a day from 13. That could be promising, since it doesn't look like it'll be in the budget to try RAW any time soon.
