Is it reasonable? (Breeder Question) |

|
Since Doug gave me okay for second dane into our home, I've been searching. I found this lady who have several puppies for sale born 9/22/08. I contacted
her because these puppies are exactly 8 month apart with Duke and fell in love with the puppies when she send me the pictures. Soon as she write me back with
direction to go see the puppies, Im going to visit. She told me she own both mom and dad but I dont think they come with papers. She got several harlequins,
one merle, and 3 mantle looking puppies. Her price for the puppy is $800. She is willing to take deposit and make payment. I know harlequin from decent
breeders are over at least $1000 or more. Is $800 reasonable for puppies without paper?

I'd go and visit, Maya, and bring an armload of questions for the breeder. If she's reluctant to answer any of your questions, that's a red flag.
There's an awesome post (I think by haleheq?) in this forum that has some sites that tell you what to look for in a breeder. 800 sounds really high for an
unpapered pet pup. But go and visit, and bring a list of questions with you. Let us know how it goes!

That was the post Jen and it is full of great links and information, here is the link Maya. (I don't know why the link brings you so far down in this thread--the first
response by heleyeg in this thread is what I am refering to)
Does the breeder have any health screening documentation of the parents and possibly grandparents? $800 does seem high for an unregistered litter. That amount is often the cost for AKC registered "pet quality" dane pups. Alison and

I might be the odd one in this group, but I would not go visit the puppies. After doing rescue for years, I can't tell you how often I
heard about someone going to "just visit" puppies and came home with one because they felt sorry for the pup and/or their heart melted (whose
doesn't when seeing a pup? LOL). I'm hearing these stories while the owner is asking for my help (breeder is long out of the picture) in dealing with
a serious health and/or temperament problem.
To answer the original question - no, $800 isn't worth the risk if you feel it's a bad situation. If the upfront price from a good breeder is too high, consider rescue. You might not find a young pup, but you can still great a wonderful companion....while supporting a great cause. Bev

fotodanes: you are not odd one out on this one.
If I'm going to give my very hard earned money to support ANY breeding program I had better get papers. They should also health test the parents and they should show their dogs. To me that is a good breeder. Otherwise, I would rescue. I mean, if the breeder doesn't health test then it is more of a crap shoot as to whether you will get a healthy long lived dog, so why not rescue. If you aren't concerned about papers then why not rescue? If you don't want to pay into the $1000's for a well bred dane, then why not rescue? Both my girls are rescues and I paid $200 for Venus and $150 for Isis. And after that very little sum of money I have the pleasure of knowing it will go to a worthy cause, not just someone who left their intact dogs alone in the back yard. I really didn't mean for this to sound harsh in any way so please don't take it that way. This is just something I feel very passionately about. Michele

Those health tests and the breeder's time and experience are really the only reason not to rescue! We rescued Mecka and we've been very fortunate. Her
raw diet has kept her strong and healthy (so far) but when we wanted another Dane, you better believe, health testing for the parents, DNA profiles and
pedigreed backgrounds were absolutely essential in making an informed decision. It's worse than sad to see a dear little puppy that you've come to love
so deeply have seizures, becomes crippled or even worse. One vet appointment for testing will cost more than $800 I guarantee. Save an innocent dog from a
greedy person's mistakes or do your homework on the best background you can buy! My $.02.

My hubby just called from work. He wanted me to check his email account. Well, without telling me, he's been looking for our 2nd dane puppy. I think he was
going to surprise me but I think he got scared about doing it himself.
He found it from one of the website from Florida. www.ocala4sale.com if anyone can check and tell me what you think, that will be great! www.freewebs.com/starkennels They have one harlequin female, with paper $800, without paper $600, have some nice pedigree bloodline, some imports in them too. If Doug can get a day off from his side job, we are going to try to visit. Im not sure which puppy from the puppy section though I learned that Duke's mom Gracie died right after all her puppies start eating dry foods. Owner didnt know why and didnt find out what happened to her. So Im scared that Duke might get sick later on. We've been thinking about rescue, but we decided if we are going to have animals around, we want to know the background of the dogs. If someone have time to check the this breeder, let me know what you think Maya ![]()

well looked at the website. one thing i noticed is that the female look a bit too skinny.(could be the way she is standing) she the mom for the newest litter.
but other then that i think they are nice. if you look at starkennel website u can find links to a couple of other breeders they deal with. n you can see the
differences..

Duke01222008 wrote:Just so you know, it is against AKC rules to "sell" papers. A responsible breeder does not charge more for AKC registration. All Great Dane pups should be sold with registration paperwork. Those that are to be pets should be sold on limited registration and those that are show potential & going to a home to be shown should be sold on full registration . A different amount paid should NOT be the determining factor on if a puppy is show/breeding potential. Either the dog is or isn't. And it shouldn't be up to the buyer to determine the quality/potential of a puppy. Duke01222008 wrote:Not trying to be disrespectful, but why do you say these dogs have a nice pedigree? There are not any champions up close. Champions a few generations doesn't mean much - LOTS can change in a couple generations. There is nothing wrong with imports, but they aren't necessarily better than what we have stateside either. There are good/bad dogs and breeders all over the world. I'm also not seeing any health testing results when I go to OFA's webpage . Bev |

Im not trying to start anything here but if you look at both pedigrees there are several different colors on both the sire and dam's side. I would probably
keep on looking and take a pass on this so called breeder.

No way would I spend my money on dogs from this breeder. To put it bluntly, my poorly-bred rescue female has better conformation than that breeder's dogs.
I also agree 100% with fotodanes' input on imports, etc. in her post. There's no mention of health testing or showing on the breeder's site
either. You could get a rescue dog just as good or better than what this so-called breeder is breeding and for less money at that. Take a pass and keep
looking.

Thank you so much for input guys! Taking lot of note so I wont make a bad decision. I really dont know much about bloodlines and imports. I know I like
American dane looks a lot than euro dane. Im going to keep searching. Doug was thinking harlequin puppy before xmas or around xmas for my xmas gift/anniversary
gift in December but he couldnt really didnt know where to start so he finally told me about it. I saw the pictures and puppy was cute so I was going to jump
on it. Im going to learn little bit more on buying puppy. I didnt search for great dane when I got Duke. I just know he was going to be big, and the owner was
giving the puppy for free and I didnt have money at that time so I jumped on it. Duke havent had any problems and very laid back, goofy, very nice personality
so I thought if I get another dane puppy from breeders who worked on dane for long time, puppy will be good. I need to get more knowledge.
I live in Georgia, if anyone know some good breeders, let me know. If it in driving distance, it can be Florida and Alabama too. Maya ![]()

Usually a limited registration means your puppy should be spayed or neutered so that it does not reproduce. Showing a dog in Confirmation means it is being
evaluated by judges to be determined if it is worthy of breeding.

I want to thank you all for your opinions. I decided not to get from her. Im going to do more and more research. I actually found 2 Great Dane breeder here in
my town last night. I was told from others that there were but I couldnt find them but I found them looking at the dogbreeder info website. Im going to check
them out too.
One of the breeder from Florida(this is a different breeder), she said if whoever want to buy her puppy, they come with full registration, health check, genetic soundness, with excellent temperament. She ask that if new owner decide to breed the dog, she want to chose the stud or the female and want a pick of the litter. She want to be involve in the process. I havent even talk to her about getting the puppy from her. Is that normal thing for breeder to ask? Maya ![]()

That is not uncommon in show lines, and often the breeder will only allow you to co-own with him/her until the dog is "finished," or has completed a
championship in conformation. They do it to make sure that their line remains high-quality and that people aren't out there breeding awful genetic messes
from their dogs.

I see, thank you for the information. I wanted to find out how much she is charging for her puppies and before she gave me price, she send me that email so
before I write her back, I wanted to find out. This is my first time actually spending money to buy puppy so I wanted to make sure what she was talking about.
I never thought there are so many thing I have to learn and study before buying a puppy.
