To Crop or Not to Crop? That is the question! |
Lead | ||
|
My Dayna is 9 weeks old. I am trying to decide if I want to crop her ears or not. I certainly like the regal look that comes with a nice ear crop, but I worry
about getting a hack job too. So I have very little time to make a choice here and I'm trying to weigh the risk and rewards.. Any advice is appreciated..
In the meantime...

Cropping is strictly a personal decision. If you can not find a vet with experience that can show you reference crops they have done, then I wouldn't do
it. Get in touch with your local dane club and find out who they recommend. Also, be prepared for 6 months and upward of taping. If you have the time, money,
patience, and you like the look, there is no reason not to.

Here's some other potential sources of info for ya. Just be sure that if you do decide to crop, be prepared to the dedication of ear taping required
afterwards. It's only the right thing to do...

There is no guarantee on the ears standing. Even if everything is done right. Genetics, Ear leather, Type of crop, the longer the ear, the longer it takes to
stand and some never do. I think if your debating whether you want to do this or not. How will you feel if they don't stand or lean in/out?.. Also I would
be leery of any vet that will crop after 10 weeks

Awe Crystal, I just saw the pix you posted in new members! She's Beautiful!!.. My personal preference with a female, is the natural ear. I think they look
more feminine that way. Love her collar too! She looks very Regal

PawZing wrote:Thank you. I agree that the natural ear look is more feminine. My husband thinks if we have a great dane it should look like one. I do like the cropped ears, but cant help but wonder how well it will take. Not crazy about getting a bad crop, ya know? Oy Vey! Going to talk to the vet today to see how they feel about it and to look at some picture references. Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it very much! |

Ears cropped or not everyone will definately know it's a great dane................well except for those that think harlequins are dalmations but once they
are grown that question is put to rest.

I agree with lagatella - our boy is not cropped and everyone knows he is a Great Dane.
In fact, our vet - one of the most respected in the entire area - do not do any cropping or tail docking at all - unless medically necessary. Also, 10 weeks is getting a bit far along for the crop to take how it should. And my final soapbox stand would be this... why would you want to put your pup through a painful ordeal for a cosmetic reason? Not trying to be rude... just my thoughts.... my wife originally wanted whatever Dane we got to be cropped but when we finally got Fin she fell in love with those big floppy ears... absolutely couldn't or wouldn't do it. What ever you decide, I hope it all goes well for you. ~peace~

My harl boy was cropped when we got him, he looks wonderful but one ear still bends.... My fawn boy is natural and people do call him a hound dog - really
hurts his feelings :-( My blue girl is natural as well and I have to agree with PawZing I think it makes her look more feminine especially since she is euro
and has the bigger blocker head. Whatever your decision she'll be beautiful :-)

Such a hard chioce! lol.. I go back and forth like 10 times a day. Because I very much do agree that the natural ear is more feminine.. I really appreciate
everyone imput.. And I will certainly let ya'll know what I decide. I checked out a vet on Friday who was just AWFUL, the man have bleeding boils all over
his hand and arms, he didnt wear gloves at all when he examed her and neglected to tell me he hadnt done a crop in 8 years! I know the economy is bad, but wow,
sounds money hungry to me and totally unprofessional! Thank goodness for the mouthy off the clock receptionist I bumped into on the way out, who spilled the
beans. Sheesh. It's looking like I'll run out of time either way. I have one more Doc to look at then I'm giving up and keeping her natural. Thanks
again EVERYONE so much!

Wanted to give an update.. I have decided to keep Dayna natural. I just cant get over that sweet puppy face, those big blue eyes (that a camera with a flash
just cant capture) and those cute floppy ears.
I plan to get a black male in the future (like a few years, when my son is walking and whatnot) and I will likely crop him when the time comes. Thank you everone for your thoughts/advice! |

I think they look much more cuddly with the floppy ears - jmho!
I'd never crop them - as mentioned above why put them thru the painful surgery? Either way, this is one fantastic creature! |

I agree with the natural look especialy for pet Danes, if I were into showing them I might have a different opinion.

Personally, I would stay natural. I have a male mantle and there is no question about what he is...Occassionally, he will put his ears on his head (kind of
folded up) and he looks SO cute, but I am SO glad I didn't crop his ears. Good Luck either way!

I Kept my boys ears natural, only because I took the vets advice and he was getting a little on the old side as far as cropping goes. However I love him just
the same, and I think his floppy ears fit his personality better, I must say I prefer the look of the cropped ear better, but its totaly a personal decision.
Your right though your Dane has an adorable face and you have to love the ears!
Take care Nick, and Ares |

Absolutely at this point the only option is natural. The Europeans and brits don't even allow it. Why would you want a pet to endure the surgery and taping?
Kiss those soft velvet ears and then think about a scalpel.
